Bhimashankar Trek via Shidi Ghat – Trekking near Pune

Bhimashankar trek near Pune can be done via either Shidi Ghat or Ganapati Ghat. Around 100 kms from Pune its most scenic and calm destination for trekking. Bhimashankar is famous for bhagwan Shiv temple which isone of Jyotirlinga. It is located in the village of Bhorgiri 50 km north west of Khed, near Pune, in India. It is located 110 km away from Pune in the Ghat region of the Sahyadri hills. Bhimashankar is also the source of the Bhima river, which flows south east and merges with the Krishna river near Raichur. The other Jyotirlinga shrines in Maharashtra are Parli, Tryambakeshwar and Grishneshwar. Regular pilgrims near Mumbai visit Bhimashankar from Karjat via Khandas. The Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary located here is a popular weekend getaway from people from Mumbai and Pune.

This trek starts from Karjat and ends in Bhimashankar hence its preferable to go by public transport. If you can do return trek to Karjart then it well and good and then you can take private vehicle. From Pune you can take any local or express train which stops at Karjat. By vehicle you have to take NH4 towards Mumbai to reach Karjat. From here you have to reach to Kashala and then Khandas village which is starting point of trek for both Shidi ghat as well as Ganapti ghat.

Shidi ghat trek path is littleĀ dangerous in rainy season if you are inexperienced trekker. Otherwise its total fun. Guide can be found in Khandas village at reasonable rate if you do not know route. If you are doing first time then better have a guide as finding route is difficult than actually going through it. This route is steepest route to top. As there are ladders on the way to cover difficult rock patches hence called as Shidi Ghat or Shidichi Vat.

Half way on the route to top Ganapati ghat path also merges and now you can see lot of other trekkers. Little eateries are on the way where you can have breakfast or even lunch. All typical Maharashtrian food available here like Vada Pav, Bhakri Pithale etc. This trek to Bhimashankar will complete in almost 4-5 hours depending on your fitness level. On the way you pass through Bhimashankar wildlife sanctuary. You may spot few birds and animals on the way if you are lucky.

Please take Bhagwan Shivji darshan at one of the finest temples in India. You can also see source of Bheema river which is about 5 minutes away from temple. On weekend the place is crowded. You can get public transport buses as well as private taxis to return back to Pune or Mumbai.
